Since preschool, I knew that this was something I loved to do as soon as I drew some scribbles and named it “Dorothy and Toto”. A portrait to me is a way to learn about other people. When drawing someone, the artist must study the face and body while staring down every curve and imperfection. When I draw someone I take inspiration from their music/art or take deep consideration of the person’s essence: What are they doing to make a difference? These portrait drawings tend be warmup pieces for me, and I say that because I don’t believe another person’s face is another person’s property/art. I want to acknowledge people I like through these pieces because representation matters. With my platform, I choose to highlight the game changers in our society.
